Why is it important to care for your children’s teeth?

Did you know that tooth decay (dental caries) is one of the most common chronic diseases in children? It is five times as common as asthma!

Caring for your children’s teeth and keeping their gums healthy from the time they start teething will help keep cavities, infections, and pain at bay. Further, decayed baby teeth can cause damage to permanent (adult) teeth.

Having a regular hygiene routine with your child dentistry near Caulfield is one way to go. But, you also need to ensure that you follow good oral hygiene practices at home. If you notice white lines or spots on your child's front teeth, contact the dentist as these are early signs of decay.

Children with special needs

If you are making an appointment for a child who has special needs, please speak to one of our friendly reception team so we can work through a process that will best suit you and your child. Call on 03 9571 6667 to book an appointment.

Your child’s first dental visit

The first dental visit for a child should be scheduled around the time of their third birthday if there are no concerns that would warrant an earlier visit. The most important aspect of the visit is getting to know and trust our practice, dentists, and staff. A pleasant, comfortable first visit fosters trust and helps your child relax during subsequent dental visits. Allow your child to sit on your lap during your next visit to our child dentistry near Caulfield office while you have your teeth examined.

Preventative Procedures for Children at Child Dentistry near Caulfield

Our preventive procedures at child dentistry near Caulfield are designed to keep debilitating dental diseases like dental caries at bay. Fluoride treatments are available to deliver fluoride to the teeth and strengthen them against cavity formation. Dentists also apply fissure sealants to teeth that are more prone to food accumulation and thus decay.

Tooth Fillings for Children's Dental Health

If your child has a cavity, the dentist at DentalCare Carnegie will fill it with dental filling to preserve its chewing function. Our specialist in child dentistry Carnegie aims to treat symptoms and prevent early tooth loss.

Tooth Extractions: When are they necessary?

There are several reasons why the dentist may need to extract a tooth. These are some examples:

Over-retained deciduous teeth:

Baby teeth in some kids tend to remain in the mouth for too long and hinder the eruption of permanent teeth. When this occurs, the over-retained deciduous tooth must be extracted to allow the permanent (adult) tooth to erupt properly.

Crowding:

If your child's teeth are overcrowded, the orthodontist may recommend tooth extraction to make room for proper tooth alignment.

Infected teeth:

A dentist would have to extract a severely decayed tooth. This happens when there are several cavities, especially in deciduous teeth.

At this appointment, she can assess your child and give you very important information about your child's tooth development, dietary needs for healthy tooth development and answer any questions you may have about your child's oral health

Yes, we do use 'happy gas' otherwise known as Nitrous Oxide. The answer to this depends on many factors including the age of your child, the treatment needed, the length of the treatment, the anxiety or anticipation levels of your child. We will be able to guide you through these options at your consultation in the clinic.

The main focus for us is that your child feels as stress-free and as calm as possible during his/ her treatment.

We have many strategies to manage the expectations and requirements your children and you as parents/caregivers have and in most cases, can perform the treatment in the clinic.

There are instances where we will recommend your child have their treatment done under General Anaesthetic in the hospital. No, you should not be worried! Our recommendation is to book in a consultation with Dr Linda who will be able to review your child and give you the most up to date, safest advice for your child.

It is very important to make our children feel like they are independent. Most likely, they feel that way already and are ready to take on the world!
Here are some tips to help your children have a positive association with tooth brushing and good oral heath:
1. Model tooth brushing to your children. Show them how good you feel when you have clean and healthy teeth.
2.Let them brush their teeth first and then let them know you will just double check the really hard spots to reach.
3. Make brushing teeth a fun habit. Use reward charts and/or play a one of their favourite songs for two minutes while they brush. Here's a favourite of ours, the wiggle tooth brushing song: https://youtu.be/25eHECdTSI8
4. Be excited when your child finishes brushing their teeth. You can say, "WOW, your teeth look so clean and shiny" or, "WOW, your breath smells so fresh and clean"

I recently visited Dr. Alex Maer at Dental Care Carnegie, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. As someone with dental anxiety, I was quite nervous about my appointment. However, from the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel welcomed and comfortable. Dr. Maer is incredibly skilled and thorough. He took the time to explain each step of the procedure, and I appreciated his gentle approach and attention to detail. It's clear that he genuinely cares about his patients' well-being and goes the extra mile to make sure they feel informed and safe. I've been so impressed with the care I've received that I've also brought my family to see Dr. Maer. Whether it's a check-up or a more complex procedure, he consistently provides excellent care. The entire experience, has been top-notch. If you experience dental anxiety, I highly recommend Dr. Alex Maer. His compassionate and patient-centered approach makes all the difference. We'll definitely continue coming back for all our dental needs!
